Wallpaper that hides imperfections

Wallpaper that hides imperfections

Maybe your walls aren’t as perfectly smooth as you’d like or perhaps they have been painted on multiple times, or you could even have a textured wall that you’re just unhappy about. With all the new lines of wallpaper that have come about after technological advancements, they are going to work wonders and fix up your wall.
New types of wallpaper are now durable enough to cover unsightly problems such as cracks, panelling and cinderblock. There are paintable wallpapers which come with a ‘strong ready-mixed adhesive’ that is affixed to your walls, allowing you to paint over to match the rest of the room or leave white. There are also textured types such as linen, that could cover up more types of eyesores.
While hanging wallpaper can be a useful trick to cover up wall blemishes and damages, you must take great care to ensure it comes out great and is also durable. Here are some things you should remember before installing wallpaper:
  1. Nails and screws
There could be nails and screws holding your drywall or lath to the wall studs that could be peeking out the surface. Make sure to hammer these back in place for an ideally smooth wallpaper installation.
  2. Take care of cracks and splits
While it is easy to just cover these up with wallpaper if you want the best results you have to get rid of the irregularities. For any crack or split that is less than half an inch in diameter, you can simply use a joint compound, for larger cracks you can use a patch kit or drywall tape. Make sure to sand the area after for that smooth finish.
  3. Large holes and other damages
Unfortunately, as much as we would like, wallpaper cannot be hung on top of very large holes because of course, these would lead to it ruining easily if something ever fell through the hole. If it is a significantly damaged wall, you might have to totally fix the wall but if this is a small hole, you can simply cover it up first. For walls damaged significantly by water, you will need to have these fixed or risk your wall developing mold and mildew if you cover this up.
  4. Cleaning the Wall
Prior to applying your adhesive primer for wallpaper, you want your walls to be clean. You can use this by mixing a cleaning solution with warm water or commercially available wall-preparation mixes. By ensuring your walls are clean and free from any residual wallpaper glue, debris and dirt, your wallpaper adhesive has a cleaner and stronger bond with your wall.
